Frequently Asked Questions
How does compression actually reduce file size?expand_more
We re-encode embedded photos at a lower quality (and, at higher compression levels, a lower resolution) using your browser's built-in image codec, then rebuild the PDF's internal structure more efficiently. This works best on scanned documents and photo-heavy PDFs. A PDF that's mostly text or vector graphics has little to recompress, so the reduction there is naturally smaller — if we can't meaningfully shrink a file, we say so and return it unchanged rather than pretend otherwise.
Will compressing the PDF reduce its quality?expand_more
Our "Recommended" setting balances file size and image quality for everyday use. "Extreme" reduces image resolution and quality further to reach the smallest possible file, while "Less" keeps images closer to their original quality.
Are there file size limits?expand_more
The limit is determined by your device's available memory (RAM), as processing happens locally. Generally, we support files up to 250MB for smooth browser performance.
